Congrats to Ryan Smith who won the Draw Prize at the BHP Wed Night Fun Ride at Bur Oak last night. (Not the NHL Hockey Player Ryan Smith, but a Ryan Smith none the less.)
Ryan was already signed up with a new MCA Novice license for the 09 season and looks race ready. We had a handful of fresh faces and some of us regulars out for a couple of fun laps. The trails are in excellent shape. We even stayed pretty much dry.
We also saw Jayson Gillespie with the provincial and development teams at Bur Oak training on mountain bike again. That is really great to see.
T minus 6 sleeps til race number 1.

When: Saturday, May 2nd
Meet: Breakfast at Stella’s on Sherbrook @ 9:00
What to Bring: rakes (fan or tine), spade style shovel, pruning shears, axe, buck saw, hoe, food and water.
What we’ll be doing: Tomek and I were there on the 26th and there is not too much dead fall so there is nothing really to clear which is good. Here is what needs to be done:
- There will be some underbrush to clear from some parts of the trail and this will be most easily done with pruning shears.
- We will probably clear one new path approximately 20 meters in length, but it is all in the open and hoes, rakes, and shovels will be best for this.
- We need to assess which parts of the course we are using for race. Ideally XC race times should be around 20-25 minutes for expert and the classic course is longer than this, therefore we will need to see if we can shorten the course while at the same time making sure course has its technical and fun sections.
Contact Hal L if you have questions.

Looking to hook up with a few other riders for a fun, casual bike cruise on Thursday nights? Greg Keeler (shop mechanic) and Jeff Hampshire are leading Thursday night rides, starting from the shop, 1813 Portage Ave, around 6:00 pm. The route will vary from week to week but will likely include pavement and some light trail, and will never stray too far from home base. The pace will be moderate at most - just some casual fun on our bikes. Contact Greg at the shop (888-4586) for more details.
